Bitcoin Treasury Firms Strategy and Metaplanet Face MSCI Exclusion

Summary
- Metaplanet seeds $132M BTC into US-listed entity
- MSCI index changes possible by Nov 2026
- Sustained institutional buying via Fidelity and 13F filings
MSCI might boot Metaplanet and Strategy from its major indexes. New screens target firms that simply hold bitcoin without real operations. The consultation closes on September 30.
Changes could start as early as November 2026. At the same time Metaplanet pushes a $132 million bitcoin treasury deal that seeds a Nasdaq-listed US platform.
The move highlights growing tension between corporate bitcoin holdings and traditional index rules. Institutional demand for bitcoin treasury exposure shows no sign of slowing.
Context
MSCI is reviewing rules that would classify companies whose primary activity is holding bitcoin rather than operating businesses. Both Metaplanet and Strategy would likely fall under the proposed screen.
Index exclusion would limit passive fund ownership. It could pressure share prices.
The review comes as bitcoin treasury strategies gain traction among public companies. Metaplanet’s latest step extends that model into US markets.
Details
Metaplanet will transfer 2,100 BTC worth over $132 million to Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise. The gaming media firm will be renamed Superplanet and trade under the ticker SUPA. The transaction gives Metaplanet a US capital markets foothold without new bitcoin purchases.

Twelve of the fifteen largest institutional holders of Strategy added shares in the second quarter, according to 13F filings. Strategy itself made no bitcoin purchases or sales in the period and sold $334 million in its own shares. Fidelity clients bought $23.92 million of bitcoin during the same window.
Citi plans to launch bitcoin custody services inside its Custody+ suite later in 2026. These developments underscore continued institutional adoption even as regulatory screens evolve.
Outlook
MSCI is expected to announce final decisions after the September 30 consultation closes. Any index changes would take effect no earlier than November 2026.
Market participants will watch whether bitcoin treasury firms adjust corporate structures or accept reduced index exposure.
